LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – It’s something no one wants to come home to – frozen pipes.

It’s even more frustrating and expensive when they pop or break.

Fortunately, there are a few simple steps you can take to prevent this from happening.

One way to avoid this problem is to routinely keep water flowing in your home.

This allows pipes in places such as basements, basements, or crawl spaces to be exposed to prolonged, cold temperatures to prevent them from freezing.

If you plan to be away from home for a few days, it’s a good idea to keep the heat at 55 degrees or higher.

And if you have pipes in closets, open the doors while you’re away to let heat in.

The La Crosse City Utilities Department said pipes don’t cost much

“All it takes is a cool night with a breeze out of the way and let that air blow on your house and your pipes are frozen,” said Bernard Lenz, utility company for the city of La Crosse.

If you won’t be around for an extended period of time, it’s a good idea to have a friend check your house regularly, or turn off the water and winterize your home.

For more ways to prevent frozen pipes, see the utilities page on the city’s website.
