Proposal May Require Car Wash Facilities in Bahrain, Middle East to Install Water Filter Systems

A proposal for a water recycling plan for car washes in Bahrain, Middle East, could include the installation of water filtration systems

Car washes in Bahrain, a Middle Eastern country, could be forced to recycle water following a unanimously approved proposal from the southern city council. The proposal would oblige all facilities to install water filter systems that allow multiple use, reported ZAWYA.

The proposal was led by the Chairman of the Council’s Legislative, Administrative and Financial Committee, Hizam Al Dossary.

“When cleaning cars, large amounts of water are wasted through pressure-oriented hoses,” said Al Dossary, ZAWYA reported. “Bahrain is a country with limited natural resources and conservation should be a priority, but not with current car wash practices.”

According to Dossary, high-tech water recycling equipment is available for car washes and prices may vary.

According to ZAWYA, these filters can save gallons of water and be more cost effective for car washes. Facilities must take into account the volume of water used each day, as well as the chemicals and procedures that the proposal also requires for the washing and rinsing processes. Car washes are currently dumping water or allowing water to evaporate instead of reusing it.

“Neighboring countries have made significant strides in reusing car wash water by establishing rules and regulations to enforce water recycling in these facilities. Here in Bahrain we aim to do that, ”added Dossary. “A grace period could be granted to test and implement the move.”

Dossary said it may be necessary to install separate water treatment facilities in car wash centers to ease the burden on national water treatment facilities, ZAWYA reported.

The proposal was forwarded to the Minister of Construction, Local Affairs and Urban Planning, Essam Khalaf, for review along with the other ministries and government agencies concerned, ZAWYA reported. The council must be informed of a veto within two weeks, otherwise the decision will be implemented immediately.
