Rapid City reminds residents to ‘be kind to the pipes’

RAPID CITY, SD – Rapid City reminds residents to be kind to their pipes.

According to the Water Reclamation Division, residents should be careful about what they put on the dresser in their home. Human waste and tissue paper should be the only things that do the flushing.

City officials also say it matters what it puts down the sink drain as well. With colder weather nearby, this means more cooking in the kitchen and the risk of “FOG” – fats, oils and fats – and this can lead to expensive repairs down the line.

“We all have our own service lines from your home to your street, which is where the city’s main lines are,” said David Van Cleave, superintendent of the Rapid City Water Reclamation Division. “If the blockage occurs in your service line, it can cost many thousands of dollars to dig this line and replace it if necessary.”

Van Cleave recommends keeping a can for storing fats and fats in the kitchen and throwing it away in the trash after it solidifies.

Sewer congestion occurring in main lines bring their own inconveniences, such as: B. Temporary business interruptions and possible road closures to carry out repairs.
