Roads around Laois town to close as rusty old leaking water pipes set to be uprooted

Roads on the outskirts of Abbeyleix are due to be closed in April and May as Irish Water works with Laois County Council to dig up and replace rusty old pipes that are in dire need of repair.

The company says Abbeyleix is continuing work on replacing essential water pipes to improve security of supply and reduce high leakage in the area.

Work, due to begin on Monday April 12, includes replacing more than 1.5 km of old cast iron water pipes at Tonduff in Abbeyleix on the Portlaoise side of the city.

According to Irish Water, a traffic management system will be set up in Tonduff to facilitate the safe delivery of this work. It is said that the L-1656 road will be closed from April 19 to May 7, and the L-6717 road will be closed from May 4 to May 21. It is said that the diversions will be clearly signposted.

According to Irish Water, the work may involve some short-term supply disruptions that we understand may cause inconvenience. The project team will ensure that customers are informed at least 48 hours before planned water shutdowns.

The Irish Water and Laois County Council apologizes for the inconvenience this improvement work may cause. The work is being carried out on behalf of Irish Water by Ward and Burke Ltd. and is expected to be completed in Tonduff by the end of May. MORE BELOW MAP OF TONDUFF DOWNLAND.

Irish Water said the pipes will be replaced with new high-density polyethylene (plastic) pipes, which will improve water quality and reduce the leakage that was affecting customers’ water supplies in these areas.

The company says the work will also include laying new water connections from the public water main on the street to customers’ property lines and connecting them to the customer’s water supply. If the existing service connections are carried out on the public side, these will be replaced as part of this improvement work.

To date, Irish Water and Laois County Council have saved over 6 million liters of water a day across County Laois. This is enough water to feed more than 46,000 people a day. This is due to the reduction and repair of leaks in several towns and villages across the district. It is claimed that this has significantly reduced the number of outbreaks and water outages, resulting in more reliable water supplies for homes and businesses in Laois.

Joe Carroll, Irish Water, said of the project, “We understand that this type of work can be impractical and we ensure that our work teams make every effort to minimize the disruption caused by this work. We would like to thank the local community, businesses, homeowners and commuters for their patience and cooperation as we carry out this important work to improve the water network to secure water supplies in Laois. “

According to Irish Water, this project is an example of how it works in partnership with Laois County Council to reduce leaks every day. It is said that fixing leaks with over 63,000 km of water mains in Ireland can be complicated. As part of our national leakage reduction program, EUR 500 million will be invested by the end of 2021 to reduce leakage across the country by repairing and replacing old and damaged water pipes.

According to Irish Water, this will ensure a safe and reliable water supply that is vital to our health, our environment, and our growing population and economy. More information is available at www.water.ie/reducingleaks.
