Roanoke plumbing expert alerts homeowners to risk of frozen pipes | State

ROANOKE, Va., December 29, 2020 / PRNewswire / – Southern Trust Home Services, a leading HVAC and plumbing company in the Southwest Virginiaremind Roanoke– Residents of the area to protect their homes from frozen pipes this winter and reduce the risk of potentially catastrophic water damage.

Pipelines often run through unheated or uninsulated parts of buildings such as crawl spaces, attics and exterior walls. If water inside freezes and expands, the pipe can burst, quickly resulting in water damage and high operating and repair costs.

“A burst pipe can do a lot of damage in a short period of time,” he said Ted Puzio, Owner of Southern Trust Home Services. “Repairs and replacements of damaged property can cost thousands of dollars, and that doesn’t take into account the time and inconvenience involved, or the possible loss of irreplaceable items like photos and family heirlooms.”

However, a few simple steps can help homeowners avoid frozen pipes:

  • Check for leaks: Small air leaks near pipes can cause them to freeze very quickly. Use sealant or insulation to seal off annoying cracks.
  • Wrap exposed pipes: Protect pipes in unheated areas of the house with an insulated cover.
  • Keep indoor air warm: Lowering the thermostat at night or on the go can save you running costs. However, keep a minimum temperature of 55 degrees.
  • Pack the outer hoses: During the winter months, disconnect and store the outer hoses and make sure that the inner valve is completely closed. Make sure the tube bibs are completely empty before covering them.
  • Let the faucets drip: If temperatures are expected to be in the single digits or stay below freezing for more than a few days, leave the bathroom and kitchen fittings open. A drop of warm water prevents the pipes from freezing.
  • Keep cabinet doors open: Let the warm indoor air enter the pipes under the sinks in kitchens and bathrooms, which often run through outside walls and are prone to freezing.

If your pipes freeze, call a plumbing professional right away to have them set up before they burst.

“Protecting the pipes in the coldest part of the year is not very difficult, but a lot of people have put it off,” said Puzio. “Fortunately, frozen pipes can be treated and refrozen before a disaster occurs. The advanced trenchless technology now available makes inspection and repair easier and cheaper than before.”
