Traffic in U.S. 15-501 will be diverted to Moore County for the next few weeks while NC Department of Transportation crews perform emergency maintenance.
A 30-inch drain pipe buried 20 feet under the freeway between Cannon Road and Stanton Hill Road failed after the November 11th rainstorm. The road is expected to be closed in this area northeast of Carthage for about three weeks, starting at 8 a.m. on Thursday.
The crews will replace the damaged pipe with a larger 48-inch pipe that is more resistant to adverse conditions and meets modern drainage standards. The cavity is then filled up again and the roadway over the pipe rebuilt. The work schedule is weather dependent and can change.
During the closure, drivers will use a signposted detour using NC 24-27, US 1 Business and South Plank Road to get access points on either side of the work zone.
Drivers should watch out for crews working on this stretch of the highway and allow additional time for the approximately 18 km detour.
