Sempra Energy : SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA GAS COMPANY – Industry-Leading SoCalGas Energy Efficiency Programs save 40 Million Therms in 2020

LOS ANGELES – Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) announced today that the company’s energy efficiency programs last year helped save more energy than any other natural gas utility in the United States

The utility invests more in energy efficiency than any other local natural gas distribution company in the country and is currently running the largest natural gas energy efficiency program. In 2020 SoCalGas’ energy efficiency programs saved enough energy to power 100,000 households in Southern California for a year. The lower energy consumption enabled SoCalGas customers to save more than $ 44 million in energy costs last year alone and cut greenhouse gas emissions associated with climate change by more than 211,000 tons – the equivalent of 45,000 cars off the road.

“Energy efficiency must be the foundation if we are to build the cleanest, safest, most innovative energy company in America. The track record for energy efficiency is undisputed: it reduces greenhouse gas emissions and saves our customers money on their bills, ”said Gillian Wright, Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer, SoCalGas. “When customers think about their natural gas consumption, they should turn to SoCalGas and our energy efficiency discount and cost saving programs to help them meet their own sustainability goals.”

SoCalGas energy efficiency programs offer constant energy savings and have been industry leaders for more than a decade. Around 1.5 million households and companies signed up for the energy provider’s energy efficiency programs in 2020. One of the most effective SoCalGas energy efficiency programs is the Household Energy Report. Private customers who take part in this program will receive a personalized report that will help them better understand their natural gas consumption and how they can use energy wisely to reduce their bills. SoCalGas also offers private and business customers discounts on energy efficiency for hundreds of devices and products that can save energy and reduce costs.

An energy efficient natural gas appliance will save its customers thousands of dollars in natural gas costs over the course of its life. A water heater can save about $ 1,500, and an efficient traditional water heater can save about $ 200. An energy-efficient oven uses about $ 550 less natural gas over its lifetime, and a smart thermostat that learns a customer’s schedule and temperature preferences to adjust the temperature in their home accordingly can save $ 125 over its lifespan.

Over the past five years, SoCalGas’ energy efficiency programs have generated over $ 1 billion in avoided energy bills and delivered more than 219 million Thermos in energy savings, enough natural gas consumption for 548,000 households per year. These energy savings reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 1.15 million tons of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of removing more than 250,000 cars annually. Overall, these measures have helped SoCalGas customers save over $ 241 million on their natural gas bill over the past five years.

In addition to the energy efficiency programs, SoCalGas’ ESC (Energy Savings Assistance) program offers eligible customers free renovations for tenants or homeowners that can save energy, reduce natural gas consumption and improve the safety, health and comfort of the tenant or homeowner. SoCalGas offers this service to around 100,000 customers every year. To date, more than 1.5 million households have received upgrades under the ESA program.
