Septic system replacement grants available in Alfred, Almond areas

Allegany County Health Ministry still has money for a 50 percent refund to replace eligible wastewater treatment plants, the county announced this week.

Properties within 75 meters of Canacadea Creek in the Alfred or Almond area are located in a priority geographic area where there is an urgent need to reduce the impact of wastewater on groundwater and surface water. If you own property in the area, you may be eligible for a grant to help cover the cost of replacing a cesspool or repairing, replacing, or upgrading your sewage system. The program offers grants to cover up to 50 percent of the eligible costs of eligible wastewater treatment projects, up to $ 10,000 per project.

To apply, go to https://www.alleganyco.com/departments/health/environmental-health/ and click on individual wastewater treatment systems or call 585-268-9250 and press option 2 for environmental health.

The application must include sufficient information about the condition of your septic tank and the scope and cost of the proposed repair or replacement so that the county can determine whether your project is eligible and how much you are entitled to. Read the application carefully and provide all the necessary information. Failure to do so could result in a delay or refusal of funding for this program.

Funding for the program is limited and the county can only provide grants for wastewater treatment projects that significantly and quantifiably reduce the environmental and / or public health impacts of cesspools or sewage treatment plants. If your project is selected for a grant, the county will inform you of your grant and the expected reimbursement for your project. The county will also notify you if your project is not eligible for funding. When you receive a reward letter, you must confirm acceptance of the reward and the conditions of participation by signing the letter and returning it to the district. Once you’ve signed and returned the award letter, you can hire a design professional and a contractor for your sewage system project.

After you have completed your project, you will be reimbursed for the eligible, documented costs incurred in completing your project up to your funding amount.

“The county encourages you to apply for this program,” said the Ministry of Health. “This is a unique opportunity for the state, local government and property owners to work together to address an urgent environmental and health problem in our community, and we hope you will take advantage of it.”
