Rundle-Spence Mfg. Co., has been part of the Milwaukee countryside since 1871 and has served plumbing, heating and industrial customers for 150 years
Imagine, in 1871, Ulysses S. Grant was our 18th President, the cable car was invented, and the first major league baseball game was played. We have a long history – in fact, our first deliveries were made by horse and buggy.
Thomas Spence and Joseph Rundle founded the company to meet the need for high quality sanitary products in a brand new industry.
Our brass, iron and porcelain foundries in Milwaukee produced high quality sanitary ware that was shipped around the world. Our iron foundry and refining department and many other departments were located on South Water and Virginia Streets. Brass fittings and fittings were made in our factories on 4th Street. In our showroom, which is also on 4th Street, customers were able to visualize these new sanitary products that were increasingly being used in private households.
Drinking fountains known in Wisconsinites as “bubblers” also have a long history involving Rundle-Spence. Rundle-Spence has made a variety of these drinking fountains over the years and used the term “bubbler” in our catalogs from the early 1900s.
Drinking fountains became essential to provide a good source of freshwater to the public in urban communities. Early versions of drinking fountains included a bubbling stream for people, a trough for horses, and a bowl for dogs.
In our long history, our goal has been to provide our customers with the latest technology for sanitary products as well as a large inventory and competent staff.
With the development of Rundle-Spence, our customer base has diversified. We not only look after plumbing, heating and industrial companies, but also manufacturers, architects and institutions such as municipalities, utility companies and schools. Other services we offer our customers include on-site engineers who support our customers in planning and designing, manufacturing and our RedHot services. This includes the delivery of commercial water heaters, the repair of water heaters and boilers, as well as on-site start-up services for commercial heating systems and boiler installations.
In our plumbing showrooms, our contractors can send their customers to assist them in choosing plumbing fixtures. We have also expanded our offering to include our main website atrundle-spence.com, a website specific to our ShowPlace at showplace.rundle-spence.com and customer service via SMS under our main number 262-782-3000.
The fifth generation, still locally owned and operated by the Spence family, continues the company’s long legacy with exceptional customer service at our three locations in New Berlin, Madison and Fond du Lac. David Spence, President, said, “Although production ceased in the 1950s, the company continues to thrive, serving the plumbing, industrial, heating, well and septic tank industries through innovative products and services as a wholesaler.” many customers and suppliers who helped Rundle-Spence celebrate this monumental anniversary, and we look forward to serving our professionals over the years.
