Should Hotel Guests Always Put Coins in the Sink?

“This is the reason why hotel guests should always throw coins into the sink” is the text in an online ad that has been making the rounds since at least November 2020.

The key word here seemed to be “always”.

This was not the first such hotel advert that we have reported. We previously published a story about a similar ad that read, “Why You Should Always Put a Towel Under the Hotel Door.”

Readers who clicked the ad about putting coins in a hotel’s sink were directed to an 80-page slideshow article. The headline read, “Use These Hacks Next Time You Stay At A Hotel”:

We all love to travel, but let’s admit it – not every hotel is suitable for a king or queen. Sometimes we have to compromise if we want a vacation that fits our budget.

What makes matters worse is that the hotel room may not always look exactly like the photos online. The photos could have been misleading – the bed looks bigger than it actually is or the booking website publishes photos of a completely different room. The truth is, you will never know until you get there.

Therefore, sometimes you need to bring some things that will enrich your vacation. Always be prepared for a five star hotel experience with these hacks!

The image from the ad eventually appeared on page 28. The ad about coins in the sink and the one about putting a towel under a hotel door both appeared to imply security concerns:

Wash and roll

Have you ever paid to have your clothes cleaned by the hotel? There is always the possibility that something will be ruined or lost. Even if everything goes smoothly, you still have to pay the high price for this service. Just a few items of clothing can cost you a pretty penny.

Instead, use a few coins and some plastic to clog the sink and wash your clothes in the sink. Then you can hang them around the room to dry them out.

The article merely advised hotel guests to grab plastic and coins to clog the sink for washing clothes.

We leave it up to readers to decide if they consider it hygienic to wash clothes in a hotel pool with coins and plastic. Sinks usually come with stoppers that can be used to hold water in the sink.

The ad in question appeared in a previous submission on Reddit’s subreddit r / savedyouaclick. The most popular comment was: “Why coins ??? Why not just a normal plug? That’s crazy. “Another user jokingly replied to the comment with,” ALWAYS put coins in the sink! “

Perhaps we recommend doing “always” to avoid ominous clickbait ads that lead to 80-page slideshow articles.
