Splashing out on a bathroom? Here’s what you need to know

If you can find a complete bathroom suite with every element singing – well, congratulations. Have your coffee and enjoy our pictures.

I won’t be (very) hurt. Nevertheless, the modern, somewhat deconstructed bathroom takes a more creative approach and cuts off a highly individual, bolder, mixed tableware set.

The classic bucket washbasin made of enamelled steel has been used in garages, workshops, gardens and studios since 1930, but is also perfect for a relaxed, deconstructed bathroom. A bargain from Alape for 114 €, versatile.

The sink can be a stand-alone design piece, the anchor for primary, exquisitely detailed storage and stunning brassware.

I asked Sinead Morrissey with City Tiles & Bathrooms and Marie O’Connell of OB Heating, Plumbing, Bathrooms and Tiles to explain how we should approach all things basin and beauty in renovations and new builds.

Should we really strive for different pieces to start with, or stick to the security of a brand’s suite?

Sinead says, “I think it’s okay to do both. Sometimes mixing styles and brands can add a real personal touch rather than picking all of them from the same suite. Whether you mix colors or mix styles, e.g. B. select a different tap or mix a round LED mirror with a rectangular vanity. They can make a bathroom really unique. There is no right or wrong – we take care of every single customer. “

So back to the sink and vanity, what is the most important thing?

The first question I always ask anyone when it comes to the sink or the vanity, “continues Sinead,” is the location of their pipes. This can be very limiting in terms of style and shape, as pipes rising from the floor preclude the option for a wall-mounted vanity. It’s always best to have a rough idea of what size sink or vanity you’ll need or need to bring in your plans to make sure you don’t lose too much floor space.

“The counter space is essentially what makes a vanity practical for everyday use,” continues Sinead.

“In a perfect world, the sink is tidied up every day, and all the tubs and bottles are put in the storage room below, or maybe a big boy. However, we know that this is not the case in the real world.

“Counter space can make life easier by holding everything from razors to makeup without them being unsafely balanced on the edge of the sink!”

Marie O’Connell from OB’s design team points out scalability and practicality.

“Make sure the pool meets the requirements and that the size and depth are appropriate for the room.

“The basin for a cloakroom is probably only used for hand washing. So you can use a smaller basin with a shallower depth. In a countertop basin, it is important to have an overflow to prevent water damage from a possible running tap. “

It seems so easy and cheap to cobble together something from a sprint on Pinterest and a stab on the credit card online. What would a typical beginner’s mistake be when we say we just bought the sink, a sight that cannot be seen in a passion?

Sinead replies, “One of the most common mistakes I come across on a regular basis is with customers trying to renovate without doing proper research. For example, if you buy a wall-mounted vanity to find out later that the wall cannot take the weight, or if you choose a washbasin with too much depth that will clutter the room. An experienced supplier should correct these mistakes at the bathroom design stage. “

What about a double vanity with two nice sinks for me and yourself? Can I put up a double somewhere?

Do I really need one outside of a glossy magazine illustration? Is it pure vanity?

Sinead and Marie admit to the aesthetic self-esteem and family struggle at dawn that I really had overlooked.

“People love the feel of a boutique hotel,” says Marie O’Connell. “With a double vanity you get exactly that. We all have more cosmetics than ever before, so a double vanity offers much-needed extra space on the worktop and storage space underneath – fewer rows! “

Sinead brings us back to the effects of visual volume and memory.

“A double vanity can really change the look of a bathroom,” she adds.

“And although they are sometimes seen as a waste of space, they are often indispensable. I would always recommend a double vanity for a heavily trafficked, spacious bathroom as a single sink can look pretty lost in the room. “

I’m a bit of a fan of Alape steel basins and was wondering which materials Sinead and Marie find popular with their customers.

It’s a surprise to hear that the texture and the countertop basin are rising in terms of trends. I had already noticed in 2016 that Swoon of Sweden is taking on vivid colors in their vanities, but are we ready to move away from silky white, chrome and neutral tiles?

“There are some excellent cymbal material options,” Sinead explains. “Classic ceramics will always be an icon, but some independent pool suppliers have switched to resin pools, which are very tough and don’t scratch that easily.

At the high end of things, however, there is a growing demand for glass sinks and dolocast sinks, a dolomite-marble composite (mylifebathrooms.com). When it comes to holding the basin, metal frames have been back on the market recently – very noticeable (and useful for doubling up on towel rails). “

Sinead continues, “For fans of the traditional style, built-in countertops have the added benefit of having more floor space, adding to the practicality and look of a truly modern design. In terms of color, white is still the color of choice when it comes to sanitary ware, but options exist; For example, Burlington’s Jet range offers traditional style sanitary ware, but in a dramatic gloss black.

“In the Mylife bathrooms, baths and washbasins are now available in 1,500 different colors, so that the future of sanitary products looks much more colorful!”

Marie agrees the increasing choice of colors and characters is causing a sensation this year. “We see that black bathroom accessories have a remarkable appearance again. In addition, we have just received a bespoke selection of wooden countertops which are a real talking point for our customers. Frosted glass sinks, free vanity units in RAL colors (a complex but highly precise customization system) and brushed brass tapware are extremely popular. “

Computer Aided Design (CAD) is an ideal place to bridge the gap between customers and suppliers with an in-house design team. Include your bathroom supplier in the detailed millimeter details right from the start, with which even a squeaky place works well.

If you’re getting irrational about a Bauhaus sluice gate of a cymbal set, a cooler head with design smarts can indicate rude plumbing can dangle in full view to soften your emotions before you buy. By screwing in and cementing parts, mistakes in the second fix can be destructively and costly undone.

Often times, it costs absolutely nothing to benefit from exactly this type of professional design help. So use them.
