GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) – On Sunday, dozens of volunteers from Street Church Ministries in Greenville distributed candy, coloring books and Bibles to families in Upstate before Easter.

“To be out here today to see the families, to see the faces, to see the children. Just to see the smiles and be able to share the love of Jesus, that’s what it’s about and it doesn’t get any better than that, “said volunteer organizer Doranden Powell.

But it was also the introduction of their new mobile kitchen unit.

We first reported that the unit was destroyed in December following a Christmas Hope drive through incident.

“When we were leaving, a drunk driver with no lights hit our mobile kitchen in the street church. It exploded on the sides and it was a total loss,” explained Founder and Senior Pastor Darlene Smith-Atkins.

Despite the loss of that unity, Darlene says, the mission to provide food for children and their families could not stop, even though it was not easy.

“It was a long, long month before we stopped working on it. But we got U-Hauls and just kept on serving U-Hauls to make sure the food went on,” she said.

We took a look inside the new truck, which contains a sink, refrigerator and work area.

According to Powell, the new mobile unit is larger than the destroyed one.

“It’s a blessing, it’s bigger than our last, so we have more freedom of movement now. We can make more things out of it, so that was a blessing in and of itself that we could do more now than we ever thought we could before “said Powell.

According to Darlene, the new mobile kitchen unit was paid for through a combination of final unit insurance and community donations.

Street Church Ministries will be serving meals from the new trailer every Thursday from 4pm to 5pm at the YMCA Judson Community Center starting April 1st.

Street Church Ministries staff and volunteers say that now that they have a new mobile kitchen unit they will be looking for a new permanent location to use the trailer and store goods as they have been using the community center as a temporary location since the COVID use. 19 pandemic began.
