Frequently asked questions about kitchen faucets
Do i need a touchless or touch sensitive faucet?
Non-contact faucets that are activated by hand movements in front of a sensor and touch-sensitive models that turn on and off when you touch any part of the handle or neck are both convenient and practical for many users. Landers stated that both types of these faucets are becoming increasingly common in the kitchen, highlighting their food safety benefits.
By eliminating the need to use your fingers to turn a handle, these faucets can drastically reduce the risk of cross-contamination in your kitchen when handling raw meat or seafood. The same goes for washing your hands when you return home during a pandemic.
I have found that these faucets can also reduce your overall water usage as you are less likely to leave the water running for long periods of time when your hands are busy.
How do I install a faucet myself?
Installing a kitchen faucet is probably easier than you think. You’ll need a few common tools, like a pelvic wrench, and a partner who can provide you with extra hands. The most popular faucet models, including those we featured on our list, come with several installation videos from both the manufacturer and the customers.
It’s worth noting that installing a touchless or touch-sensitive faucet is more involved, and if you are unfamiliar with electrical wiring, you may need to hire a professional.
What should homeowners look out for when buying a new kitchen faucet?
According to Lee, it’s important to customize your potential faucet to suit your cooking method. Otherwise, you can end up with an uncomfortable faucet that lacks the required functionality. Among other things, she recommends asking yourself whether you are using the spray function and whether you need to turn or swivel the faucet.
Landers added that you should also consider the height of the spout as some faucets are extremely tall and may not look their best on a kitchen island. this could distract from the rest of the room. She also stated that it’s important to choose a finish that matches the style of your home and the level of maintenance you want. Some surfaces show more water marks than others, such as polished nickel, chrome, and black. Others that are considered “living surfaces”, such as oil-cleaned bronze, will patinate over time.
Lee also noted that you can’t go wrong with a simple gooseneck faucet. The shape is timeless and fits into both classic and modern designs.
What common mistakes do homeowners make when choosing a kitchen faucet?
According to Lee, the biggest mistake homeowners make when choosing a faucet is not considering how they use their space. A common problem is that the tap is too low and doesn’t have enough space for large pots and pans. “We recommend finding something that gives you enough room in the sink to work,” she said.
Another problem for homeowners is matching the finish of a new faucet to their existing kitchen. According to Landers, stainless steel and polished nickel are classic surfaces. “These finishes go well with a number of different styles in the home, making them versatile options,” she said. “Customers have more fun adding accent colors like gold and black to their plumbing and cabinet parts to add that finishing touch.”
How do you measure a kitchen faucet?
The first step when measuring a new faucet is to find out how tall your potential faucet can be without obstructing cabinets or windows. This is very easy with a tape measure.
To find out the depth of the spout, measure from the mounting hole (where the faucet base sits) to the center of your sink. This will help eliminate any faucet options that could end up spilling out too far. Landers stated that the sinks she typically buys for her customer’s kitchen are 33 inches wide and any regular pull-down faucet will fit something that size.
If you’re buying a faucet for a kitchen sink that is 15 to 18 inches wide, a pull-down faucet is perfect.
What kind of exercise do I need?
You’ll need to choose between rotating or stationary, normal (constant jet) or two modes (normal and spray), and low-arch (3 to 20 inches above the sink) or high-arch (aka.) Gooseneck that extends more than 20 cm above the top of the sink) models.
What is a faucet valve?
This is the mechanism that turns your faucet on and off and adjusts the water temperature. One-handed designs use one lever to control temperature and flow, while double handles have two to control the supply of hot and cold.
Double-handle models are less common and are generally bought for their aesthetics rather than their practicality, which is why we haven’t featured any here. However, double handles are usually more stable than single handles.
