University City announces program to help homeowners pay for sewer lateral repairs | Local News

The University City Council has allowed the National League of Cities to offer a guarantee of service lines to University City residents.

This voluntary program is offered by Service Line Warranties of America, an independent BBB accredited company. The program offers homeowners the opportunity to purchase a plan that allows them to pay fees that, in most situations, could significantly exceed the city’s limited budget for repairing side plumbing work for residential underground sewer systems.

Qualifying homes include properties with up to six units. Commercial and industrial buildings are excluded from this program.

Sanitary sewer side plumbing carries waste from a residential lot into the main sewer of the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District. Repairs and replacements on the side sewers and connections to MSD sewers are the responsibility of the homeowner. The costs are not covered by MSD or basic homeowner insurance.

SLWA’s warranty plan is available for $ 7.25 per month and must be valid for 30 days before an emergency occurs. Not only do homeowners have no annual limit or deductible for eligible sewer repairs, they also have access to a 24-hour hotline for emergency repairs 365 days a year.

Residents of the university town can contact SLWA at 833-908-2415 for further information on prices, service or other questions.

The SLWA Service Line warranty program covers the cost of repairs to sewer pipes on the outside of a homeowner’s property and includes everything from the cost of a full camera inspection to sending a qualified installer to carry out the work to paying the bill in full directly to the plumber.

With the SLWA program, up to USD 8,500 per service call with several service calls per year are available for covered repairs without additional service fees or deductibles. When a customer’s service line needs to be repaired, a simple call to SLWA’s 24-hour hotline will dispatch a local, licensed contractor who is familiar with University City building codes. All additional costs can be covered by the city’s plumbing duct side repair program (SSLRP), which is capped at $ 2,500 per incident.

Homeowner praises program

Many factors contribute to the life expectancy of a service line, including age, type of piping material, soil conditions, and installation quality. Chiquita King has had problems with sewers and water since moving in more than 20 years ago. When she heard about the Service Line Warranties of America program for University City residents, she signed up.

After her sewage problems escalated, she filed a lawsuit. “I’ve never been treated so well by so many people,” said King.

“My situation turned out to be a very complicated project that took almost a month to complete. … Ultimately, not only did the warranty plan save me thousands of dollars, but everyone went overboard to make sure I was satisfied every step of the way, ”said Ms. King.

City Manager Rose added that some of the first university town residents to take advantage of the program reported that it not only saved them money, but also saved them the time and hassle of finding a reliable service provider on time.
