STEVENS POINT, Wisconsin (WAOW) – A new program at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Points (UWSP) hopes to tackle contaminated soil in Badger State.
Current septic tank and waste disposal regulations go back nearly four decades, something UWSP and other government agencies are looking to correct.
There are over 700,000 septic systems in Wisconsin, but they were last examined in depth in 1982.
The data on chemical and mineral contamination are collected by Professor Robert Michitsch from the UWSP and students.
They say the study is necessary to ensure people don’t get sick and can stay home.
“We believe it can enable people to stay in their homes longer because they can simply replace their tank with these resources.” Dawn Crim, Secretary of the Department of Security and Professional Services, said, “We are excited to have this one Manage funds, and that data will give us a sense of what some of our needs are in the state. “
That date will help the state update EPA standards and could even help farmers provide natural fertilizers for their crops.
The study starts in spring and ends in autumn 2022.
