WICHITA FALLS (KFDX / KJTL) – If you have decided to have dinner at home this Christmas, make sure to think about how to dispose of that Christmas waste.

Christmas is a busy time not only for families but also for plumbers who receive urgent calls over the holiday weekend.

Asa Kelley is on call for Brian’s Plumbing this Christmas, and he said many of the problems plumbers see during this time of year can be found in the kitchen and bathroom.

Kelley said cleaning up that big Christmas dinner can wreak havoc on your sink and waste disposal if you clutter it with too many items.

With this company you invited, bathroom usage is also increasing, which means more and more toilet paper is being flushed down the toilet, making your drains more prone to clogging.

Kelley said the material of your pipes can play a big role in determining the severity of the clog and how much work it will take to resolve the problem.

“There are a lot of older pipes, you know, older styles of pipes, like clay pipes, and a lot of toilet paper is going to get stuck on the debris in that pipe, and usually we just come out and run our machine and bring it to a stop,” said Kelley.

Kelley said another way to avoid pipe problems is to avoid throwing hard and solid foods like potatoes and apples in the trash.

Make sure that bones from the Christmas turkey or ham do not end up in the disposal, because this is a battle lost for your pipes.

As for the toilets, ask guests to throw away the toilet paper instead of flushing it.

This could be exactly the rescue you need for these pipes and will help add even more stress to your plate this Christmas.
