Plumber: High-end toilets can be functional ‘smart-art’ for today’s bathrooms | Siouxland Homes

Question: Ed, reading your last few columns got me interested in the new electronic plumbing fixtures. But when I looked at the new “smart” toilets with bidet functionality, I had a sticker shock. What makes it such a high-end product? Mary Ann, Washington State

Answer: Cutting-edge technology is expensive when it first hits the market, and that includes plumbing fixtures.

I remember seeing my first brick-sized calculator as a kid and it was hundreds of dollars. A smart toilet is not like a cell phone with a calculator app, but it contains the latest high-tech electronics.

The intelligent toilet / bidet options include: LED night lighting, movement-activated opening and closing of the seat, seat heating, UV light disinfection of the bidet wand and even a touchscreen remote control. In terms of performance, the pump assisted double flush can give a smart toilet a powerful and efficient flush. Also, many smart toilets are designed to look like a modern work of art. So when you add a nice design with a smart toilet, it’s easy to see how one plus one can make a very expensive number two!
